about

This collection of songs, all recorded in 1992 and finished in 1993, is sort of “White Album” for PNATSH. Not only, because these recordings were never released officially, they are musically the most diverse product of the band. It starts with the straight side of PNATSH, that means Punkrock, Reggae and Ska, mixed in one song or purely gathered one after the other. These are the first eight songs, enough for one record alone. The "metallic" sound here derives from Klaus´ new guitar equipment: While touring in all the time bigger venues in 1992 his old 50 Watts Mesa Boogie couldn´t cope with it and he changed for a bigger Marshall solution. In studio we also tried to experiment with what rumors said about those days emerging Metallica´s techniques of guitar sound producing. That lead to the wall of sound (at least it was intended to be) in the first songs, which means that all these numbers share a slight metal sound. The opener, “All about families”, could be called “Reggae Metal”, if not to stress the trademark “Heavy Reggae”, for which our friends from famous Polish band Paprika Korps own the copyright. So far, until here, nothing new, just better produced than before.
But in the second part, all band members composed songs quite distant from the PNATSH mainstream, from African sounds via Metal to Synth Pop. We all liked to dive into these distant styles and we (still!) gratefully thank a bunch of guest musicians on brass and strings without whom we could never make these songs happen.
Some more words on the context of the recordings: In fact, we intended these tunes to be the basis of a professional production. Starting with an open air festival in Sardegna, we have been on tour in Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and, of course, in our home turf, mostly in Berlin, Thuringia and Northern Germany all over ´92 and ´93. In between these tourings we recorded all songs in the good old analogue 16-track studio of Wasserturm in Berlin´s Kreuzberg neighborhood (thanks to Paice´s part time job as engineer in there). In 1993 we attracted a professional producer, ex-Nena-bass-player Lutz Fahrenkrog-Petersen, for giving us a try in the legendary Hansa studios. The product of this cooperation is the CD Smashit from 1994 (supposed to follow soon in this collection of PNATSH works). But only two of our 92-3 recordings were used for this record (which also failed to attract the music industry as we intended). So, all these freaked-out, funny, stupid, but most of all soulful songs vanished in the archives or were namelessly published on certain platforms. We think these songs are to good to be forgotten, so here it is: PNATSH 93!
